‘Le Detroit’ in French just means ‘the straits’ it’s where the huge Great Lake/ St. Lawrence river system comes to it’s narrowest main point. The straits were discovered for Europeans by Antoine Cadillac French explorer of the Great Lake system in (1701). He 1st built on the site, building a fort. Which by later colonial times was a French-Native American settlement known as Fort Detroit.
Of course when 1st the British then the Americans took it over in the late 1700’s in English it became just ‘Detroit’.
