My explanation is this:
You work hard for the money.
Money spent means that the effort at work is now gone to whatever you spent the wages on.
When you still have the money, you hold the reward to your work effort.

You may appreciate the “things”, but they don’t seem to equal the work you do to get them.
That is one reason that people don’t buy things that they really don’t need.
