As per the issue description the display drivers are not compatible with Windows 10. So, still if you want to upgrade to Windows 10 technical Preview you may try and install the drivers of Windows 8.1 in compatibility mode.

Make older programs compatible with this version of Windows

If you will upgrade your Operating system from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 then nothing will be overwritten, all of your programs, games, documents, pictures, desktop icons etc will be there. Nothing will be lost, but there might be some compatibility issue as the drivers for Windows 10 are not released by computer manufacturers.

Before you install

Windows 10 original OS has not been launched yet. It is still the preview version. If you want to install the preview version you may refer to the links provided below. There are some third party who are promoting Windows 10 pop up/icon. If the icons are from any third party you need to ignore them.
